Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
I found myself suddenly awake very early in the morning last Monday, and for some reason I was drawn to check the news on my phone. I was shocked to read about the passing of Pope Francis which, at that point had not even hit mainstream media. But after that initial shock, it really is beautiful and amazing that our Holy Father would pass during the Easter octave. St. John Paul II also died during the Easter octave. In this season of Resurrection we are reminded that our Lord is triumphant over the grave, and therefore we have nothing to fear.
Pope Francis was a challenging figure. Ultimately, I find that he challenged me and the way I operate with the way that I am to love. He reminded me to always be aware of those who are on the peripheries. In terms of my own pastoral ministry, I really feel Pope Francis showed me how to care for our migrant community. Please join me in praying for the repose of the soul of our dear Pope Francis.
Also in this time I really would invite you all to not listen to the static that you are going to hear from mainstream media and any secular media. Remember in the Church of God we deal with eternal truth, not matters of mere policy. The election of the pope is not a presidential election. Executive orders are not going to change church doctrine. The pope is pope only in as much as he proclaims the truth of God, not truths that he creates, but truths that he serves. So as the time of conclave approaches, pray. We will have extra opportunities for you to pray here at St Elizabeth Seton. We are currently in discussion about extended periods of Adoration through the conclave. This time of interregnum should be a season of resolve to pray for the Church. We pray for the Pope who was AND for the Pope who is to come. We pray for all the faithful of the church in this time that our devotion to serve Jesus Christ, our only true Lord, will be ever more increased.
Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever!
